After Barbaros decisive win in the 2006 Kentucky Derby, the nation was captivated by what looked like an overdue triple crown in the making. However, the brilliant colt would sadly never be able to reach his full potential. A devastating leg injury in the Preakness Stakes, not only ended Barbaros career, but eventually led to his death. On Tuesday, January 29th, 2009, the two year anniversary of his passing, a magnificent bronze statue was unveiled on the grounds of Churchill Downs, just outside of gate one, to forever commemorate the brave champion, with a rendering of his most remarkable achievement. With each and every fan that pauses to pay tribute, his memory will live on for ages. A major presence was felt at the unveiling ceremony by the members of the unofficial world-wide group simply known as Fans of Barbaro. The primarily online community came together shortly after Barbaros injury, and never stopped working in his honor. Together they have saved over 3,000 horses from slaughter and raised over one million dollars for the various equine causes they support.
I think in some way there is a sense of closure but I also think that it is a little bit of a new beginning for us. Hes come home now. His ashes are here at the statue. It is inspirational and it gives us just that little extra something to continue working in his behalf. – Sally Bonneau, Fans of Barbaro
At just twenty one years of age, Anna Rose Napravnik is demonstrating why she deserves the plaudits she is receiving from veteran trainers on the east coast and comparisons to another female rider who earned a spot in the hall of fame, Julie Krone. Born in New Jersey to her father who is a farrier and her mother who also works with horses. She followed her sister Jazz to Maryland and began galloping horses in the summer for trainer Jonathan Sheppard. Richard Dickie Small gave her her first mount on Ringofdiamonds on June 9, 2005 at Pimlico and she hasnt looked back. She was the runner up to Julien Leparoux for the Eclipse Award in 2006 after notching an incredible 300 wins and sweeping the riding titles that year at Laurel and Pimlico.

My childhood was horses, my mother ran an eventing barn, and my father was a farrier, so I was born into it, I was riding horses since before I could walk and I just always had a pony to play with whenever I wanted and my whole life has just been horses.
